Grade 4 - Exploring Different Forms of Art

How We Express Ourselves

Part 1 - Exploring Roman Mosaics

CENTRAL IDEA - People use different forms of art for learning, communication, and expression.

Lines of Inquiry -  Different forms of art , Art, we connect with and appreciate, Applying artistic skills and techniques to express ourselves

I always use this unit of inquiry to embed several art skills and concepts. It helps me to build a solid foundation and develop a deep understanding of various artistic tools, media, and techniques. This particular year, I introduced students to Roman mosaics, canvas painting, and abstraction in landscapes through Matisse's work. We explored expressions and emotions with Jackson Pollock's action painting, and we introduced 3D works through Picasso's minimalist sculptures. Now, let's see how the students journeyed through exploring different mediums while creating a variety of forms of art.
This is "Exploring Roman Mosaics" part 1 of several posts I am going to create to take through this unit where you will see my Grade 4 students inquiring and exploring in the art room.

  1. Exploring Roman Mosaics

  2. Students began their exploration by learning about the history and significance of Roman mosaics. They studied different mosaic patterns, techniques for cutting and arranging tesserae, and the cultural contexts in which these artworks were created. As they created their own mosaics, students experimented with color combinations and spatial arrangements.

  3. Task- Students had to create an abstract design and had to choose a limited palette of only 4 colours.

The Process
