Play of light and shade

Students of Grade 2 have been inquiring about properties of light and how people determine its use. In the art room students wanted to study the play of light and shade on the object and how an object changes its colour with the changing light of a day.

NATURE WALK

The inquiry began with a walk around the school campus and observing the shadows of the tress and other objects casting on each other. They also noticed how different shades of a colour is  generated because of the varying intensity of light. One of the amusing observation for the Grade 2 students were the highlights on shiny leaves-  part of an object (mostly shiny or smooth objects) appear to be white because of a bright source of light.
Students learnt about the different tones such as  dark tone, middle tone, light tone and highlights. Students were given a demonstration of pencil shading by the teacher showing all the different tones.

PENCIL SHADING - PRACTICE CREATING DIFFERENT TONES

Students were then given an opportunity to practice and create these tone by using 6B,4B,and 2B drawing pencil.

PRACTICE BLENDING

Students practiced more of pencil shading by achieve a gentle gradation from dark to light- A smooth blending of the pencil marks.

STILL LIFE

To apply their skill and understanding of light & shadow and pencil shading students decided to  a still life.
